Although Duncan Macdougall has been away from Selkirk for 20 years, he has always kept close connections with the town of his birth. He played for Selkirk Rugby Football Club some years ago, and captained the Selkirk Thirds.
The cousin of Ewan MacDougall, the 1999 Standard Bearer for the Selkirk Merchant Company, Duncan says that he is "Delighted to be appointed as the Selkirk Incorporation of Hammermen Standard Bearer". "I will carry out my duties to the best of my ability in the footsteps of former hammermen."

Another cousin, Murray Macdougall served as community policeman in Selkirk for approximately eight years before being posted to Melrose. Duncan's Uncle, also called Murray Macdougall, was a former Incorporation of Hammermen Standard Bearer before joining the Metropolitan Police in London. Another uncle was Bill Doyle, who was the oldest Selkirk British Legion Standard Bearer.
Duncan's sister, Sheila Campbell, was "delighted" when she was asked to be Lady Busser.
Duncan is married to Sharman, and has two sons. Craig, who is 21, was the youngest Border rugby referee, and the younger son, Christopher, had his 17th birthday the day after Duncan's appointment as the Incorporation of Hammermen standard Bearer.
