Ewan MacDougall joined the Merchant Company in 1995 and is an active participant in the Company's events. Looking forward to representing the Selkirk Merchant Company at the 1999 Common Riding, Ewan enjoys the cricket competitions and bowling against the Ex Standard Bearers.
He rises at 5 each morning to deliver the mail and was Postman of the Year for the Selkirk area. An active member of the Selkirk Pipe Band, he passes on his skills to the local children and visited Selkirk's twin town Plattling in Bavaria twice with the Pipe Band, including an appearance at the official twinning event in 1998.
Ewan played football with Selkirk Victoria Football Club before playing for Selkirk Rugby Football Club for six years. He has now rejoined Selkirk Victoria.
Other members of Ewan's family are also involved in the 1999 Selkirk Common Riding. His wife Laura looks forward to being the Merchant Company's Lady Busser. Indeed her father proposed Ewan for the position of Merchant Company Standard Bearer at the annual dinner on 12 March.

Ewan and Laura's 12 year old son Greg is a 'Common Riding fanatic', keen to follow his father in the main Procession. Ashley, their daughter, will be riding The Marches this year, not bad for a young girl of only 10. Ewan's cousin Duncan Macdougall has been appointed as the 1999 Incorporation of Hammermen Standard Bearer.
The Ceremonial Flag, which is used during the procession, will have the ribbons of six former Merchant Company Standard Bearers tied to it, as well as Ewan's own colours of tangerine and deep royal blue.
For Ewan the highlight of the Common Riding will be the Casting of the Colours, where he will represent the Merchant Company by casting the flag to The Souters of Selkirk
He will also give ribbon flashes to Merchant Company members and other Standard Bearers and Lady Bussers and to other officials in the town including Provost Jim Newlands and his wife Bunty.
He will have a hectic programme of events in June, and fortunately has very supportive colleagues at the Selkirk post office, where he works.
