Russell comes from a long line of Selkirk Common Riding Principals, his father Falconer Grieve was Royal Burgh Standard Bearer in 1970, whilst his uncle, Elliot Grieve carried the flag in 1961. Other relatives who have been involved in the Common Riding include Kenneth Pearce (Hammermen Standard Bearer), Alan Pearce (Merchant Company Standard Bearer), Elliot Grieve (Merchant Company Standard Bearer) and his grandfather, who returned from working in Africa to be Colonial Standard Bearer in 1963. He is also related to James Heatlie, the present Burgh Officer. Russell has a sister, Julie, who is engaged to Kelso Rugby player Simon Forsyth.

Born in Selkirk, Russell was educated at Knowepark Primary School and Selkirk High School where cross country running featured high on the sporting agenda. His main interest is equestrian cross country eventing, he has ridden the Marches every year since he was five years old.

Russell was attendant in 1988, 89, 90 and 98 and says that the experience gained then will put him in good stead for the coming year. His parents will be giving their full support during the Common Riding week.

Russell is very much aware of the responsibility which rests on his shoulders and he is looking forward to his big day in June when he will carry the flag of the Ancient and Royal Burgh of Selkirk round its ancient Marches.
