Colonials have their man
Selkirk Colonial Society is making its own little piece of history at this year’s Common Riding in their appointment of Gerald Beggs as their Standard Bearer. Gerald is now back in Selkirk after a life-time working in Canada and is a member of the Colonial Society committee.
The uniqueness of his appointment is that he is the first Colonial Standard Bearer to have cast the banner twice. He came home in 1973 after only five years abroad to cast his colours and has been a regular at the Common Riding for many years.
His grandfather, Jock Currie cast the Royal Burgh flag in 1913 and his uncle Rob Currie cast the Colonials flag in 1963 so he has a fine Souter pedigree and is looking forward to casting his colours again in the Market Place.
