Demolition of St Mary's Church
One of Selkirk’s most prominent buildings of the town’s skyline was demolished over the past week. St Mary’s Parish Church was built in the Royal Burgh in 1862, the chancel and organ added in 1888 with a major renovation in 1889 and the beautiful rose window installed in 1891. It had a sitting of 1100. Sadly, the church has been closed for over 20 years and demolition of the building commenced on Tuesday 9th November 2004. Most of the structure was gone by Thursday 11th November and now a major cleanup of the site will commence with many tons of stone to be removed.
